southern ties

People on this site keep mentioning northerners with strong southern ties can usually get bids. What do they mean by strong southern ties? Do sororities really care where you're from? Thank you!

Like if your parents are really Southern and moved north for their jobs, your grandparents are Southern and you spent every summer in the South, that sort of thing.
One or two sororities, yes it makes a difference.
It's a cultural thing.
